New Superhero keeps Maidstone clean

Maidstone Borough Council has created a new Superhero to help keep the borough clean. Captain Clean made his first public appearance when he joined Councillors and council managers on a clean up of a local litter black spot.

The all-conquering superhero is leading Clean Sweep 2002 when more than 50 groups across the borough will take on litter, fly tipping and graffiti black spots. Captain Clean will become a familiar face around the borough during A Clean Sweep and throughout the year, offering advice and information on a range of clean and green initiatives.

Captain Clean and the Crew star in a new leaflet, which sets out the council's promises to keep Maidstone clean under a number of headings - collecting refuse, bulky refuse, fly tipping, street cleaning, public conveniences, abandoned vehicles, dog fouling and recycling. It includes a tear-off credit sized card to keep Captain Clean's number handy - 01622 602162.

And the superhero will be rewarding the heroes of the week long clean sweep at a thank you evening at Maidstone Town Hall, later this year.

A Clean Sweep 2002 is organised by Maidstone council and supported by Maidstone's newspapers and Maidstone and Malling Police.

Maidstone Borough Council's top priority this year is a clean and tidy borough. The council is putting extra resources into tackling the problems of litter, fly tipping, dog fouling, recycling, street cleaning and abandoned vehicles. Council Leader Mick Stevens, says: "Everyone is helping the council achieve its number one priority, just by making a new effort not to drop litter, report fly tipping or tidy gardens and verges."
