Synopsis:
It was the world's strangest accident… While testing a new rocketship, three explorers and their on-board robot were bombarded by mysterious cosmic rays from outer space. They crash-landed safely back to Earth, but each found themselves changed by the cosmic rays. Their leader, Reed Richards, became the plastic-skinned Mr. Fantastic. His wife, Sue Richards became the now-you-see her, now-you-don't, Invisibile Girl. The last human member of the team, Ben Grimm, found himself transformed into a super-human powerhouse called the Thing. Now joined by H.E.R.B.I.E. the robot as the newest member of the team, together they are The New Fantastic Four. This animated series was produced by DePatie-Freleng Enterprises, and featured the talents of both of The Fantastic Four's creators - Stan Lee (as one of the series' writers) and Jack Kirby (as a storyboard artist), as well as the comics writer Roy Thomas behind the series. The series is famous for not including the Human Torch/Johnny Storm character from the comics and replacing him with the original character of Herbie the robot (who would later appear in the original comics). This was done due to the fact that the character of the Human Torch was optioned for a live-action version at around the same time, and not, as popular urban legends claim, due to network concerns that children would set themselves on fire to emulate him.
